Therapy
Our approach to therapy is evidence based. It incorporates Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Open Dialogue (OD). We define each of these schools of therapy very broadly so as to incorporate a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic strategies. We also draw upon the Existential and Mindfulness approaches. In this way, we bring a wide range of perspectives to our understanding of the individual and their circumstances. We work collaboratively to generate new synergies of perspective that make for change not only at the level of symptoms but, also, at the level of underlying sensitivities and vulnerabilities. Throughout therapy, we conduct regular reviews with the client to ensure continuing progress toward their goals.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
This structured and systematic therapy has been applied with great success to a wide range of psychological problems. The emphasis is upon identifying and changing situations, behaviours and cognitive (thought) patterns that contribute to emotional distress. This approach teaches the skills necessary for the quick and efficient relief of psychological suffering.
Cognitive therapy has demonstrated statistically significant outcomes relative to control and pharmacological treatments across a range of emotional conditions.
See cognitive and behavioural strategies.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
This approach is appropriate when problematic relationship patterns are the main contributors to distress. Such patterns are identified, described and carefully analysed. Specific strategies for change are discussed and implemented. Click here for more information.
Open Dialogue (OD)
Psychological problems may arise from certain interactions within relationships or families. Sometimes it is helpful to include the partner or family members in the therapeutic process as is characteristic of the Open Dialogue (OD) approach that originated in Western Lapland, Finland in the early 1980s as part of an integrated system of mental health care for persons experiencing an emotional crisis. The focus is upon facilitating mutual understanding and trust through dialogue be that between the therapist and client or between a couple or within a family or other social network.
OD was first developed as a therapeutic approach to the challenging problem of psychosis but, has since been applied effectively to a range of psychological problems. See our articles: Open dialogue with R. D. Laing and Open dialogue and the divided self.
